Driven to a higher standard… the “gold standard”~ CAAS.
One of the proudest accomplishments in our 28-year history of serving the citizens of Brevard County is to have achieved our Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS) accreditation in 2006, and re-accreditations in 2009, 2012 and 2015. Any ambulance service can claim it is delivering quality service, but an accredited agency can prove it through its written or documented procedures, systems and reports. Coastal has demonstrated full compliance with national ambulance standards of excellence.
CAAS was established in 1990 as a not-for-profit national agency to uphold quality operating standards for ambulance services. It is the gold standard for the ambulance industry, in as much as JCAHO (Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations) is the benchmark for hospital excellence.
The accreditation process entails a serious self-assessment, comparing us to the accreditation standards. We work through a comprehensive application package guiding us through the process of developing very extensive supporting documentation. This documentation is then sent to the CAAS home office for an off-site review to determine the level of administrative compliance. Once that level is passed, a team of EMS experts, including a board certified emergency room physician, and two additional senior ambulance service professionals conduct an on-site review lasting a minimum of two days, inspecting and certifying all administrative and operational aspects of our service. The site review team generates a report to CAAS, which goes before the Panel of Commissioners, an independent and impartial group consisting of individuals from EMS law, business and healthcare who determine final accreditation.
Currently, Coastal is one of only eleven ambulance services in the state of Florida with accreditation, and approximately 159 CAAS-accredited agencies in 37 U.S. states, Canada and the West Indies. This is our steadfast commitment and dedication to quality healthcare for our community, each patient, each transport, each day.
